The Zamfara State Government has approved a new pension increase for state and local government retirees as part of efforts to improve the welfare of pensioners across the state.
The approval was announced in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mahmud Dantawasa, on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the Zamfara pension increase followed recommendations submitted by a special review committee and the Office of the Accountant General after assessing the condition of retirees, especially those in the lower income category.
Zamfara Pension Increase Targets Rising Living Costs
The government explained that the decision became necessary because of rising living costs and current economic challenges affecting pensioners.
Officials said the review was also in line with the Federal Government’s consequential adjustment linked to the National Minimum Wage (Amended) Act 2024.
The Federal Government circular recommended a baseline monthly increase of ₦32,000 for pensioners nationwide.
After reviewing the state’s financial capacity, the Zamfara State Government approved what it described as a 100 percent implementation option for both state and local government retirees.
The statement read:
“Following detailed deliberations and assessment of available resources, the Zamfara State Government approved the 100 per cent implementation option for both State and Local Government pensioners.”
Thousands of Pensioners to Benefit
The government said thousands of retirees are expected to benefit from the new pension structure.
According to the statement, the adjustment is designed to cushion the effect of inflation and improve the standard of living of elderly citizens in the state.
It added:
“Under the new arrangement, thousands of pensioners across the State and Local Government system are expected to benefit from the increase, which is aimed at cushioning the effects of rising living costs.”
Governor Dauda Lawal Reaffirms Commitment to Pensioners
The government also reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of workers and retirees under the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal.
According to the statement, the administration will continue to introduce policies that support social protection and economic stability.
It said:
“Governor Dauda Lawal reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of workers and pensioners.”
The government further directed all relevant agencies to ensure the smooth implementation and timely payment of the new pension adjustment.
Why the Pension Increase Matters
The Zamfara pension increase is expected to provide relief for many retirees struggling with the rising cost of food, healthcare, transportation, and other essential needs.
Analysts say improved pension payments could also strengthen social welfare and economic stability for vulnerable citizens across the state.
