Presidential hopeful Peter Obi has dismissed claims suggesting he is avoiding former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 general election.
Obi stated that he maintains a close relationship with Atiku and described the former vice president as a respected political leader and elder brother.
Peter Obi Speaks At South Africa Forum
Peter Obi made the remarks on Friday during the Spier Dialogue 2026 held in Cape Town, South Africa.
The event focused on governance and leadership issues affecting African countries.
Addressing questions about his political relationship with Atiku, Obi said there was no conflict between them.
“Not many people are as close to Atiku as I am. So I can’t be running from him,” Obi said.
He added that his political style may differ, but insisted he has never avoided anyone.
Political Realignments Ahead Of 2027
The comments come amid ongoing political discussions ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Peter Obi and Atiku were previously linked through coalition talks aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu in the next election cycle.
The two politicians had earlier adopted the African Democratic Congress, ADC, as a coalition platform before Obi later moved to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC.
Obi Describes Atiku As Respected Leader
Speaking further, Obi stressed that his respect for Atiku remains strong despite political changes and party movements.
According to him, political differences should not be interpreted as personal conflicts.
