The Nigeria Democratic Congress has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term.
The decision was reached during the party’s National Convention after delegates approved a motion presented by Afam Victor Ogene, the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State.
The move is expected to shape the party’s political direction ahead of the 2027 general election and has already generated reactions across Nigeria’s political space.
Delegates Approve Southern Presidential Ticket
During the convention, party delegates voted in support of the proposal to reserve the NDC presidential ticket for candidates from Southern Nigeria.
According to the resolution adopted at the gathering, the party also agreed that after the completion of the single four-year term, the presidential ticket would automatically return to Northern Nigeria.
Party leaders described the arrangement as part of efforts to maintain fairness, unity and political balance within the party structure.
Peter Obi, Others Expected to Contest
The decision now clears the way for southern political figures, including former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, to contest for the NDC presidential ticket.
Obi recently joined the NDC alongside former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso after leaving their previous political platforms.
Political observers believe the zoning arrangement may strengthen Obi’s chances ahead of the party primaries.
Kwankwaso’s next political move within the party is also expected to attract attention in the coming months.
NDC Prepares for 2027 Elections
The latest development comes as political parties continue early preparations for the 2027 presidential election.
Analysts say the zoning decision could influence coalition talks, internal party alignments and campaign strategies across the country.
The NDC leadership said the arrangement was designed to promote stability and avoid internal disputes ahead of the election season.
More consultations and political negotiations are expected as the race toward 2027 gradually intensifies.
The decision by the NDC to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria marks a major political development ahead of the next general election.
With Peter Obi and other southern politicians now eligible to contest under the party, attention will shift to how the primaries unfold and whether the strategy can strengthen the party’s chances nationally.
