The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed September 29, 2026, for judgment in a suit seeking to compel the police to reopen investigations into the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.
Justice James Omotosho set the date after hearing arguments in the case filed by the Break the Silence Foundation, a non-governmental organisation seeking a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
The suit lists the Inspector-General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, as respondents.
Plaintiff asks court to order new investigation
During the proceedings, counsel to the organisation, Tunde Falola, urged the court to grant the requests made in the suit.
He argued that the earlier police investigation did not address some important issues surrounding Mohbad’s death and called for further examination of possible leads.
Falola said the organisation approached the court because it believes more questions remain unanswered.
Court rejects request to join case
The court also considered an application by Samson Obaboye, who wanted to become an interested party in the matter.
Obaboye told the court that he supported calls for transparency, accountability, and justice regarding the singer’s death.
However, Justice Omotosho dismissed the application, ruling that the applicant did not show enough legal interest to be added to the case.
Mohbad’s death continues to attract attention
Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, leading to public reactions and demands for clarity over the circumstances surrounding his passing.
The singer was buried shortly after his death, but his remains were later exhumed on September 21, 2023, for an autopsy.
The case has remained a subject of public interest, with his father, Joseph Aloba, repeatedly calling for justice and a clearer understanding of what happened.
The court’s September 29 decision is expected to determine the next step in the legal battle seeking a fresh police investigation.
