Fresh controversy has emerged over the renewed investigation into the death of Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, after a civil rights organisation opposed the reassignment of two police officers to the case.
The United Advocates Group expressed concerns over transparency and neutrality in the ongoing Mohbad death probe, insisting that the officers’ involvement could weaken public confidence in the investigation.
In a statement released on Thursday by the group’s counsel, Leke Odugbesan, the organisation urged the Lagos State Police Command to withdraw the officers and appoint a fresh investigative team.
According to the group, the renewed Mohbad death probe should be handled by officers whose integrity and impartiality cannot be questioned.
Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27 under controversial circumstances that sparked nationwide outrage and calls for justice. Since his death, Nigerians have continued to demand a transparent investigation into the events surrounding the singer’s final moments.
The rights group alleged that one of the officers failed to properly follow important leads during the initial investigation into Mohbad’s death. It also claimed the officer failed to honour a subpoena issued by the Coroner’s Court until proceedings had ended.
The organisation described the development as troubling, arguing that such actions raised serious questions about accountability and professionalism in the renewed Mohbad death probe.
The group also raised concerns about another officer involved in the case, alleging inconsistencies in his communication regarding the reassignment.
According to the statement, the officer initially confirmed his involvement in the investigation but later denied knowledge of the reassignment when contacted again.
The organisation said it had written several letters to the police authorities seeking clarification over the matter and demanding a transparent process.
“The Nigerian public deserves answers. The family of the deceased deserves closure. The memory of Mohbad deserves justice,” the statement said.
The group further called on the Nigeria Police Force to assign independent and neutral officers to the renewed Mohbad death probe to ensure credibility and restore public trust.
Efforts to get a response from the spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
Mohbad’s death remains one of Nigeria’s most discussed entertainment controversies, with legal disputes, court proceedings and public campaigns for justice continuing nearly three years after the singer’s passing.
