Governor Siminalayi Fubara is facing increasing political uncertainty after suffering major setbacks during the recently concluded primary elections across political parties.

The development comes as loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, emerged dominant in key political contests linked to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Fubara Loyalists Lose Out in APC Primaries

Reports indicate that several political associates aligned with Fubara failed to secure party tickets during the APC primary process.

The Rivers governor himself reportedly stepped away from the governorship race after it became clear that his chances of securing the party’s ticket were slim.

The outcome has intensified discussions around the governor’s political future ahead of the 2027 elections.

Wike Speaks on Agreement With Fubara

Commenting on the situation, Wike said there had been an understanding that Fubara would not pursue a second-term bid under the APC arrangement.

According to the former Rivers State governor, the agreement was part of efforts aimed at easing political tensions within the state.

“I’m not surprised that the governor withdrew,” Wike stated while addressing the development.

Analysts Divided Over Fubara’s Political Future

Political analyst and activist Okwa Dan Idam argued that several APC governors were rewarded with automatic tickets while Fubara was treated differently despite his support for President Bola Tinubu.

He claimed the Rivers governor now risks fading from the political scene if he fails to rebuild his support base after leaving office.

Idam also raised concerns about possible future pressure from anti-corruption agencies once Fubara’s tenure ends.

Some Believe Fubara Can Still Recover

However, former Secretary-General of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Anthony Sani, maintained that the governor could still return politically.

According to him, political fortunes often change over time, especially within Nigeria’s power structure.

Sani added that many politicians gravitate toward the ruling party due to the perceived advantages of incumbency.

APC Governors Secure Re-Election Tickets

Meanwhile, several governors across the country secured APC governorship tickets ahead of the 2027 elections.

The list includes governors from Kaduna, Enugu, Katsina, Kebbi, Kano, Delta, Plateau, Taraba, Akwa Ibom and other states.

The outcomes have further strengthened the ruling party’s preparations ahead of the next election cycle.
