Vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has strongly rejected allegations that he and the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, are working behind the scenes to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Speaking during an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Kwankwaso described the claims as unfounded and politically motivated.
The former Kano State governor maintained that the alliance between himself and Obi was established to provide Nigerians with an alternative platform focused on development, governance reforms and economic growth.
Kwankwaso Responds to Opposition Vote-Splitting Claims
Addressing suggestions that the NDC ticket could weaken opposition efforts and indirectly benefit the ruling party, Kwankwaso dismissed the argument and questioned the logic behind such claims.
He said critics should focus on facts rather than speculation, emphasizing that the party’s objective is to present solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.
According to him, the NDC has recorded significant growth within a short period and continues to attract supporters across different parts of the country.
Alliance Built on Shared Development Goals
Kwankwaso explained that his partnership with Peter Obi is rooted in common priorities, particularly in education, agriculture, youth empowerment and human capital development.
He stated that both leaders share similar ideas about national progress and have agreed to work together to improve the lives of Nigerians.
The former governor noted that the party’s growing membership reflects increasing public confidence in its vision and leadership.
Comments on Political Tensions
Speaking on reported disagreements between supporters of different opposition camps, Kwankwaso denied encouraging attacks against political opponents.
He said political rivalries should not be allowed to create unnecessary divisions among citizens.
According to him, most of the hostility seen online is often fueled by individuals acting independently rather than by political leaders themselves.

Kwankwaso also addressed questions surrounding his decision to accept the vice-presidential slot.
He explained that his decision was influenced by what he described as Nigeria’s existing political understanding regarding power rotation between the northern and southern regions.
The politician said he believes national stability is strengthened when political actors respect arrangements that promote inclusion and balance.
Confidence in Obi’s Leadership Commitments
The NDC vice-presidential candidate further expressed confidence in Peter Obi’s leadership style, saying he expects a collaborative administration if elected.
According to him, meaningful responsibilities would be assigned across government offices to ensure effective governance and national development.
He added that the focus of their campaign remains on addressing economic challenges, improving education and creating opportunities for young Nigerians.
NDC Seeks to Position Itself as Alternative Platform
As preparations for the 2027 general election continue, Kwankwaso insisted that the NDC is focused on building a credible political movement rather than engaging in distractions.
He said the party’s mission is to offer practical solutions to Nigeria’s pressing challenges while promoting unity and development across the country.
The remarks come amid growing political discussions over opposition alliances and strategies ahead of the next presidential election.
