Former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has said that Nigeria’s 2027 general elections may resemble the political dynamics of the 1979 presidential election rather than the 2023 polls.
He made the remarks during an appearance on Politics Today on Friday, where he discussed shifting political alliances and changing voter behaviour ahead of the next general elections.
2027 Election Will Differ From 2023, Says Tambuwal
Tambuwal stated that the political environment in Nigeria is evolving and cannot be compared directly with previous elections.
According to him, 2027 may be a replay of 1979 elections rather than 2023 due to emerging political realignments and changing interests among stakeholders.
He stressed that politics remains dynamic and influenced by new alliances forming across party lines.
Tambuwal Compares 2027 Race to 1979 Election
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives referenced the 1979 presidential election, which featured prominent figures such as Shehu Shagari, Obafemi Awolowo, and Nnamdi Azikiwe.
He said the upcoming 2027 election could reflect similar competitive dynamics among major political actors.
Tambuwal maintained that political conditions today are different from those of 2023, suggesting a shift in how voters and parties may align.
Tambuwal Speaks on Party Loyalty and Alliances
Tambuwal, who recently moved from the Peoples Democratic Party to the African Democratic Congress, also addressed his current political stance.
He said he would not declare support for any presidential aspirant until party primaries are concluded.
According to him, internal party processes will determine the direction of political support ahead of the 2027 elections.
