Austin Okocha has once again been recognised on the global stage after FIFA confirmed that the Nigerian football icon still holds the record for the most successful dribbles in a single FIFA World Cup match.

More than three decades after the achievement, Okocha’s remarkable performance remains unmatched in World Cup history, cementing his reputation as one of the most gifted players ever to represent Nigeria.

Okocha’s Record-Breaking Performance Against Italy

According to FIFA, the former Super Eagles captain completed an astonishing 15 successful dribbles during Nigeria’s Round of 16 clash against Italy national football team at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States.

The feat came against a star-studded Italian side that featured legendary defenders including Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta.

Despite facing one of football’s most respected defensive units, Okocha repeatedly dazzled with his skill, flair and close control throughout the encounter.

FIFA Says No Player Has Surpassed the Record

FIFA’s statistics show that no player has managed to exceed Okocha’s tally of 15 successful dribbles in a single World Cup match.

The closest challengers include Jairzinho, who recorded 13 dribbles against Uruguay in 1970, and Paul Gascoigne, who matched that number against Cameroon in 1990.

Several football greats have also reached 12 successful dribbles in a World Cup match, including Johan Cruyff, Diego Maradona and Jamal Musiala.

Messi and Maradona Hold Other World Cup Dribbling Milestones

While Okocha owns the single-match record, FIFA noted that Lionel Messi holds the record for the highest number of successful dribbles across an entire World Cup career, with 125.

Meanwhile, the late Diego Maradona remains the player with the most dribbles in a single tournament after completing 53 successful take-ons during the 1986 FIFA World Cup.

Okocha’s Legacy Continues to Inspire

The recognition further strengthens Okocha’s place among football’s greatest entertainers and technical masters.

Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s finest-ever players, the former midfielder remains a symbol of creativity and skill for generations of football fans across Africa and beyond.
