Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga has said he does not agree with claims that the level of hunger and hardship being discussed by critics represents the situation across Nigeria.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Onanuga said some Nigerians are experiencing benefits from policies introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He mentioned infrastructure projects, student loans and credit programmes as examples of government initiatives that have provided support to citizens.
Presidential aide highlights infrastructure projects
Onanuga pointed to recent road developments, saying some projects have improved movement and reduced travel difficulties for residents.
He recalled a trip from Ibadan to Lagos where he used an alternative route through Ijebu-Ode and noticed a newly constructed concrete road.
According to him, such projects have changed experiences for people who use the routes regularly.
He also referenced the coastal highway project, saying it has helped reduce his travel time between Ajah and Lagos.
Student loans and credit facilities mentioned
The presidential spokesperson also defended government support programmes, including the federal student loan scheme and low-interest credit options for workers.
He argued that families with children in higher institutions can benefit from access to education loans.
Onanuga also said civil servants who qualify for affordable credit facilities are receiving support through government initiatives.
Onanuga acknowledges economic challenges
While defending the administration’s policies, Onanuga acknowledged that Nigerians are facing economic difficulties.
However, he said his personal interactions with people around him do not reflect the extent of hardship often highlighted in public discussions.
The presidential aide said he regularly speaks with people around him to understand their challenges and how they are adapting.
He maintained that public conversations sometimes focus heavily on negative assumptions while overlooking developments and interventions by the government.
