Jose Mourinho has described Real Madrid as the best football club in the world, placing the Spanish giants above their long-time rivals Barcelona.
The Portuguese coach is preparing for a return to the Santiago Bernabéu this summer, marking his second spell in charge of the club.
Ahead of his comeback, Mourinho shared his opinion on the historic rivalry between the two Spanish giants.
Real Madrid ahead of Barcelona, Mourinho says
According to Mourinho, Madrid’s achievements and history make them the leading club in world football.
“Real Madrid is the best club in the world. Barcelona is one of the best after Real Madrid,” he said.
The former Chelsea, Inter Milan and Manchester United manager also discussed the different identities associated with both teams.
Mourinho highlights Madrid’s attacking record
Mourinho acknowledged Barcelona’s reputation for attractive football and attacking style but argued that Real Madrid have also produced outstanding attacking numbers.
He pointed to the 2011/12 season during his first spell at Madrid, when the team recorded 121 league goals and collected 100 points in LaLiga.
Mourinho used that achievement to support his view that Madrid’s football history extends beyond their traditional image as a defensive or counter-attacking side.
