Algeria has become the fifth African country to secure a victory at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Jordan 2-1 in their Group J encounter.
The Desert Warriors came from behind to claim all three points in their second match of the tournament at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara.
Goals from Nadhir Benbouali and Amine Gouiri completed Algeria’s comeback after Jordan opened the scoring.

The victory came after Algeria suffered a difficult start to their World Cup campaign.
The North Africans were beaten 3-0 by Argentina in their opening fixture before responding strongly against Jordan.
The win keeps Algeria’s hopes alive as they continue their push in Group J.

Ivory Coast became the first African team to achieve the feat after defeating Ecuador 1-0.
Ghana followed after securing a 1-0 victory over Panama.
Morocco later joined the list with a 1-0 win against Scotland, while Egypt became the fourth African country after defeating New Zealand 3-1.
Other African teams, including Senegal, Cape Verde, DR Congo, South Africa and Tunisia, are still searching for their first victories at the tournament.
