The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled May 26, 2026, for judgment in a suit challenging the eligibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Justice Peter Lifu fixed the date on Monday after parties in the matter adopted their final written addresses before the court.
Jonathan 2027 Eligibility Suit Heads for Judgment
Jonathan 2027 eligibility suit was filed by an Abuja-based lawyer seeking constitutional interpretation on presidential tenure limits.
The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2102/2025, asks the court to determine whether Jonathan remains constitutionally qualified to contest another presidential election.
The plaintiff also requested clarification on relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
Plaintiff Seeks Court Interpretation
Jonathan 2027 eligibility suit focuses on Sections 1 and 137(3) of the Nigerian Constitution.
According to court filings, the plaintiff argued that Jonathan would exceed the constitutional limit of eight years in office if elected again in 2027.
The suit stated that Jonathan had already completed the remaining tenure of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before winning a full term in 2011.
Request to Stop Jonathan’s Candidacy
The plaintiff asked the court to issue a perpetual injunction restraining Jonathan from contesting the presidency in 2027 and beyond.
Jonathan 2027 eligibility suit also seeks an order preventing the Independent National Electoral Commission from accepting or publishing Jonathan’s name as a candidate.
According to the plaintiff, failure to stop such a candidacy could create constitutional complications regarding presidential tenure.
Jonathan, AGF Oppose Suit
Jonathan 2027 eligibility suit is being opposed by both Jonathan and the Attorney General of the Federation.
They urged the court to dismiss the matter and award substantial costs against the plaintiff.
Both parties also challenged a separate application seeking the recusal of the judge over allegations of bias.
Court to Deliver Rulings Together
Justice Peter Lifu stated that all preliminary objections in the case would be decided alongside the final judgment.
