The United Kingdom has invited innovators and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across Africa, including Nigeria, to apply for the 2026 Digital Energy Challenge.
The programme is designed to support digital and artificial intelligence (AI)-driven solutions aimed at improving energy access and strengthening electricity systems.
Focus on AI and energy solutions
The UK Digital Energy Challenge Nigeria 2026 is co-funded by the United Kingdom and the European Union.
It targets innovations that can improve energy access, support energy transition efforts, and enhance the efficiency of electricity distribution companies across Africa.
The initiative also seeks scalable solutions that can be adapted across multiple African countries.
Funding and project categories
A total of €827,000 has been allocated to support selected projects under the programme.
The challenge is divided into two categories:
- Tech Accelerator category with funding of up to €150,000
- Partnership category with funding of up to €400,000
The remaining funds will support technical assistance, training, and implementation support.
Eligibility requirements for applicants
According to the UK in Nigeria, applicants must meet specific criteria to qualify for the UK Digital Energy Challenge Nigeria 2026.
Eligible participants include SMEs with fewer than 250 employees and annual turnover below €50 million.
Projects must also include a strong research and development component and be beyond the ideation stage.
Applicants must not have any conflict of interest with the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).
Nigeria included in partnership programme
The embassy confirmed that one of the partnership tracks will be implemented in Nigeria in collaboration with AEDC.
This is expected to support real-world testing of digital energy solutions in the country’s power sector.
The UK said Nigeria’s large electricity access gap presents an opportunity for scalable innovation.
Application deadline and process
Applications for the UK Digital Energy Challenge Nigeria 2026 opened on April 20 and will close on June 17, 2026.
Interested innovators are expected to apply through the official portal provided by the organisers.
