The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has demanded N5 billion in damages and a public apology from actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo over statements he considers defamatory.
The demand was contained in a legal letter issued by Obi’s lawyers, who accused Okonkwo of making allegations that allegedly damaged the former Anambra State governor’s reputation and public image.
The development marks a fresh twist in the growing political dispute between the former allies.
Legal Team Challenges Allegations
According to Obi’s legal representatives, the disputed comments were made during a television interview and were subsequently circulated across multiple media platforms and social media channels.
The lawyers argued that the statements portrayed Obi as being involved in bribery, fraud, extortion and other forms of misconduct.
They described the allegations as false, malicious and unsupported by evidence.
The legal team further stated that the comments went beyond political criticism and amounted to a direct attack on Obi’s character and integrity.
N5 Billion Damages and Public Apology Demanded
As part of its demands, Obi’s legal team requested an immediate withdrawal of the statements and a public apology.
The lawyers also demanded the payment of N5 billion as compensation for what they described as reputational damage caused by the publication of the allegations.
In addition, they asked for a written commitment that no further defamatory statements concerning Obi would be made in the future.
The legal notice reportedly gave a deadline for compliance before court proceedings could be initiated.
Okonkwo Responds
Reacting to reports of the legal demand, Kenneth Okonkwo dismissed the allegations and questioned the basis of the claim.
The former spokesperson indicated that he had not fully reviewed the legal correspondence at the time of his response but maintained that he would address the matter formally.
Okonkwo also suggested that any legal proceedings would provide an opportunity for him to publicly defend his position.

The latest dispute highlights the growing tensions between Obi and Okonkwo following their political separation.
