Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has confirmed that first-choice goalkeeper Diogo Costa will remain on the pitch for the entire duration of Wednesday’s international friendly against Nigeria.

The announcement comes ahead of a highly anticipated clash between the European giants and the Super Eagles as both teams continue preparations for upcoming international assignments.

Diogo Costa Gets Full Match Responsibility

Martinez disclosed that while several players will be rotated during the encounter, Costa will be entrusted with the full 90 minutes in goal.

The FC Porto shot-stopper has established himself as Portugal’s undisputed number one goalkeeper, featuring consistently during the country’s World Cup qualification campaign.

His inclusion is particularly significant after recent injury concerns limited his involvement in Portugal’s previous fixtures.

Portugal Planning Squad Rotation

Speaking ahead of the match, Martinez explained that the coaching staff intends to use the game as an opportunity to manage player fitness and assess various tactical options.

The Portuguese coach noted that several players will share minutes during the contest as preparations continue for the challenges ahead.

However, he made it clear that Costa’s role is already decided, with the goalkeeper expected to complete the match from start to finish.

Important Test Before World Cup Journey

Martinez described Nigeria as a quality opponent capable of providing a valuable examination for his squad.

According to the Portugal manager, the encounter offers an opportunity to test tactical plans and prepare players for the competitive demands awaiting them.

The fixture also serves as another chance for Portugal to fine-tune its squad ahead of the next phase of its international campaign.

Costa Returns to Spotlight

The 26-year-old goalkeeper has become one of Portugal’s most reliable performers in recent years.

Despite being included in the squad for Portugal’s previous meeting against Nigeria, Costa did not feature in that encounter as veteran goalkeeper Rui Patrício was selected to start.

This time, however, the Porto star is expected to take centre stage as Portugal faces the three-time African champions.

Nigeria Ready for Major Challenge

For the Super Eagles, the match presents another opportunity to test themselves against one of Europe’s strongest national teams.

With both sides expected to field talented lineups, football fans will be watching closely to see how the contest unfolds and whether Costa can keep Nigeria’s attack at bay throughout the full 90 minutes.
