Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has raised concern over the continued abduction of schoolchildren across parts of Nigeria, warning that the situation casts a shadow over the 2026 Children’s Day celebrations.His remarks come amid fresh attacks in which dozens of pupils were reportedly kidnapped in separate incidents in Borno and Oyo states.
Wave of School Abductions Raises Fresh Concern
According to reports, at least 82 schoolchildren were abducted between May 13 and May 15, 2026, during coordinated attacks in northern and southwestern Nigeria.
In Borno State, armed groups reportedly kidnapped pupils from schools in Askira Uba and Chibok communities.
In a separate incident in Oyo State, gunmen invaded communities in Oriire Local Government Area, abducting additional schoolchildren and leaving casualties in their wake.
Violence Deepens National Concern
During the Oyo incident, a teacher, identified as Michael Oyedokun, was killed, while other fatalities were also recorded during the attack.
Security personnel reportedly suffered casualties during rescue attempts after encountering improvised explosive devices allegedly planted by the attackers.
The incidents have further intensified concerns over the safety of schools in vulnerable regions.
“Children Remain in Captivity for Years” — Obi
In a statement marking Children’s Day, Obi said his emotions were mixed despite extending goodwill to Nigerian children.
He lamented that many abducted children have remained in captivity for prolonged periods with little progress in securing their release.
“After congratulating Nigerian children as they celebrate their day today, my heart remains heavy and troubled,” he said.
Call for Stronger Protection of Children
Obi warned that the inability to protect children from criminal elements reflects poorly on the country’s global image.
He stressed that no parent should be forced to endure the pain of having their child abducted and held in captivity for years.
According to him, continued insecurity undermines national dignity and social stability.
Growing Pressure on Authorities Over School Security
The statement adds to increasing calls for stronger security measures around schools, especially in high-risk areas.
Stakeholders have continued to urge government authorities to prioritise child protection and strengthen response mechanisms to prevent further attacks.
