Iran has announced that former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will be buried on July 9 in his hometown of Mashhad, according to state media.
The burial ceremony will come after a series of official funeral events across the country following his death.
Khamenei, who led Iran for nearly four decades, died after airstrikes on February 28, according to Iranian state reports.
Funeral ceremonies to begin in TehranIranian authorities said funeral activities will begin in Tehran on July 4 and continue for three days.
The ceremonies will later move to the holy city of Qom on July 7 before the final burial takes place in Mashhad on July 9.
Mashhad is considered one of Iran’s most important religious centres and is home to the Imam Reza shrine.
Leadership transition follows Khamenei’s death
Khamenei’s death led to a major political transition in the Islamic Republic.
His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was appointed as the new supreme leader in early March, becoming the third person to hold the position since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Reports said Mojtaba was also affected during the strikes that killed his father and several senior officials. Since taking office, his public appearances have remained limited.
Long-serving leader leaves major legacy
Ali Khamenei served as Iran’s supreme leader from 1989, making him one of the longest-serving political figures in the Middle East.
His time in power was marked by major regional tensions and continued disputes involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.
His death represents one of the most significant leadership changes in Iran’s modern political history.
