The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has opened discussions with the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Abayomi Fasina, over the suspension of the institution’s Students’ Union Government (SUG) President, James Adio.
NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde, disclosed that he held a meeting with the university’s vice-chancellor after the student body criticised the suspension of the union leader.
The association said it expressed concerns over what it described as an unfair action against the SUG president.
Vice-chancellor explains suspension
Babatunde said the vice-chancellor explained the circumstances that led to the suspension and assured him that the matter would be reviewed.
According to him, NANS appealed for a peaceful resolution between the university management and the affected student leader.
The vice-chancellor was also said to have promised that further discussions would take place during the next Senate meeting.
Investigation ordered over alleged privacy breach
The NANS president also revealed that Prof. Fasina ordered an investigation into the alleged public release of private information belonging to the suspended SUG president.
He said the university management assured him that anyone found responsible would face appropriate action.
Babatunde appreciated the response from the vice-chancellor and reaffirmed NANS’ commitment to protecting Nigerian students from intimidation.
Why FUOYE suspended SUG president
The suspension followed allegations involving the collection of N1,000 from 100-level students for practical sessions.
The university management alleged that the SUG president was linked to the handling of the funds, claiming he was involved in sharing part of the money and later received a refund into his personal account.
FUOYE said the suspension of the affected officials was part of efforts to promote accountability while investigations continue.
