The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has clarified reports surrounding a hijab-related incident at a Computer-Based Test (CBT) centre in Ibadan, attributing the situation to the actions of a single staff member.
According to the board, the issue occurred during the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) screening exercise at the Esther Oshikoya CBT Centre in Ibadan.
In an official statement released by its spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, JAMB explained that the incident was not part of its approved procedures.
The board stated that it took swift action after being alerted, directing that no candidate wearing a hijab should be asked to remove or adjust it under any circumstances.
Officials described the situation as the result of an “overzealous” ad hoc staff member who failed to follow established guidelines regarding candidates’ appearance and religious expression.

The incident sparked public concern and renewed debate over how dress guidelines are enforced at examination centres across Nigeria.
JAMB noted that additional instructions have been issued to all ad hoc personnel nationwide to ensure compliance with approved screening procedures.
As nationwide examinations continue, JAMB says it remains committed to fairness, inclusivity, and respect for all candidates, regardless of religious background.
The board also urged the public to report any similar incidents promptly to ensure immediate action is taken.
