Members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers in Oyo State staged a peaceful protest in Ibadan on Thursday, demanding the immediate release of students and teachers abducted by gunmen in Oriire Local Government Area.
The demonstration comes nearly three weeks after armed attackers invaded communities in the area and kidnapped dozens of victims, including schoolchildren and teachers.
Teachers Demand Immediate Rescue of Victims
The protesters gathered around the Iwo Road axis of Ibadan, carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs as they called on authorities to intensify rescue efforts.
Some demonstrators were heard repeatedly chanting, “Bring back our children” and “No more bandits,” reflecting growing frustration over insecurity in schools and rural communities.
The protest attracted attention from residents and commuters across the city.
Victims Still in Captivity Weeks After Attack
The abduction occurred on May 15 when gunmen reportedly stormed Esiele community in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
More than 40 students and teachers were reportedly taken during the attack.
Reports circulating online also claim that disturbing videos showing the victims in captivity have surfaced, increasing concerns among parents, teachers and residents.
Rising Concern Over School Security
The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of schools in parts of Nigeria, especially in vulnerable rural communities.
Education stakeholders and civil society groups have repeatedly called for stronger security measures to protect pupils, teachers and school infrastructure.
The latest protest adds pressure on authorities to secure the safe return of the abducted victims.
