A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Kubwa, Abuja, has arraigned a man accused of impersonating officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and allegedly defrauding unsuspecting members of the public.
The EFCC impersonation case was brought before Justice A.I. Akobi on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, after operatives of the anti-graft agency arrested the suspect identified as Salifu Olije Mustapha.
According to the EFCC, the defendant was arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on impersonation, misrepresentation, and alleged fraudulent activities carried out within Abuja.
The commission alleged that Mustapha falsely presented himself as an EFCC operative and participated in activities aimed at deceiving and extorting unsuspecting victims.
EFCC Says Suspect Used Fake Operational Uniform
Details presented before the court showed that the defendant allegedly worked alongside two other suspects identified as Abubakar, who is currently at large, and Haruna Mamuda, who is reportedly under investigation by another law enforcement agency.
The EFCC alleged that the suspects dressed in fake EFCC operational uniforms and moved around Abuja in a Toyota Corolla with registration number KTU399GT.
According to the anti-graft agency, the suspects allegedly targeted motorists and members of the public around Sheriff Plaza in Wuse II, Abuja.
One of the charges also stated that Mustapha falsely claimed to be an officer of the Nigerian Air Force while carrying out the alleged activities.
Defendant Pleads Guilty in EFCC Impersonation Case
During the court proceedings, the defendant pleaded guilty to all four charges after they were read before the court.
Following the guilty plea, prosecution counsel R.U. Adaga urged the court to convict and sentence the defendant accordingly.
Justice Akobi subsequently adjourned the matter until June 1, 2026, for sentencing.
The EFCC stated that Mustapha was arrested after intelligence reports linked him to impersonation activities involving fake EFCC uniforms and alleged harassment of motorists within Abuja.
