President Bola Tinubu has called on governments, families and communities across Nigeria to place children at the centre of national development, stressing that every child deserves protection, quality education and equal opportunities.
The President made the statement during the 2026 National Children’s Day celebration held at Eagle Square in Abuja, where he emphasised that Nigerian children must not only be seen but also heard in matters affecting their future.
Tinubu Speaks On Inclusion And Equal Opportunities
Represented by the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Tinubu said the theme for this year’s celebration, “Future Now: Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child,” reflects the need to build a society where no child feels excluded or forgotten.
According to him, every Nigerian child deserves access to quality education, healthcare, nutrition, digital opportunities and protection regardless of background or location.
The President noted that inclusion must become a major foundation for national development, adding that children’s voices and ideas should contribute to shaping Nigeria’s future.
Government Highlights Child Welfare Programmes
Tinubu said his administration is expanding several social intervention programmes aimed at improving the welfare of children and vulnerable families across the country.
He listed initiatives including Nutrition 774, ANRiN 2.0 and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund as part of efforts to improve healthcare, nutrition and educational access for young Nigerians.
The President also stated that the government is investing in STEM education and digital learning infrastructure to prepare children for the future economy.
Tinubu Warns Against Violence And Drug Abuse
The President urged children to stay away from cultism, violence, cybercrime, substance abuse and bullying.
He encouraged Nigerian youths to embrace discipline, patriotism, honesty and hard work while focusing on education and personal development.
According to him, destructive activities threaten the future of young people and weaken national progress.
Student Calls For Better Security And Free Education
A student of Government Secondary School, Garki, Abuja, Jessica Nufi, also appealed to the government to improve security and make education more accessible for children across Nigeria.
She said insecurity, poverty and social problems continue to prevent many children from accessing quality education and living safely.
Jessica urged authorities to strengthen healthcare, protect children from violence and create safer communities where young people can thrive.
The student further promised that Nigerian children would continue to obey laws, study hard and contribute positively to national development if given the right opportunities.
