Peter Obi has officially announced Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election, pledging a leadership model in which the vice president plays an active role in governance.
The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) made the declaration while accepting his nomination, describing the alliance as a partnership aimed at addressing Nigeria’s economic, security and governance challenges.
Obi Promises Inclusive Leadership
Speaking after his emergence as the party’s presidential candidate, Obi said his administration would depart from what he described as symbolic vice-presidential roles.
According to him, the office of the vice president would be fully involved in decision-making and governance.
He stated that Kwankwaso would serve as a partner in government rather than a ceremonial figure.
Why Obi Chose Kwankwaso
The announcement brings together two of Nigeria’s most prominent opposition figures.
Both men contested the 2023 presidential election separately and maintained significant political influence across different regions of the country.
Political observers believe the partnership could reshape opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general election.
Security, Economy Top Obi’s Agenda
Obi used the occasion to outline key priorities for his proposed administration.
He expressed concern over rising insecurity, unemployment, poverty and declining public confidence in government institutions.
According to him, Nigeria must urgently address security challenges to create an environment where businesses can thrive and citizens can live without fear.
Promises on Healthcare, Education and Power
The former Anambra governor also pledged reforms in healthcare, education and energy.
He promised to improve healthcare access, rehabilitate primary healthcare centres and expand insurance coverage across the country.
On education, Obi said investment in schools, teachers and vocational training would remain central to national development.
He also vowed to increase electricity generation significantly to support industrial growth and economic productivity.
Opposition Politics Ahead of 2027
The Obi-Kwankwaso alliance is expected to generate fresh political discussions as preparations for the 2027 election continue.
Supporters view the partnership as an attempt to build a broader national coalition, while analysts say its impact will depend on voter acceptance and party mobilisation in the months ahead.
