Former England midfielder Paul Scholes has questioned whether Cristiano Ronaldo should continue leading Portugal’s attack at the age of 41, describing the veteran forward’s role as a difficult decision for manager Roberto Martínez.
Ronaldo made history by appearing at his sixth FIFA World Cup, matching the record previously achieved by Lionel Messi, as Portugal began their tournament campaign against DR Congo national football team.
Portugal entered the competition among the favourites after winning the 2025 UEFA Nations League, with expectations high alongside teams such as France national football team, Spain national football team, England national football team and defending champions Argentina national football team.
Ronaldo Starts as Portugal Struggle to Find Winning Goal
Portugal made a fast start after João Neves scored early in the match, giving Martínez’s side control and confidence.
However, the advantage did not last. Yoane Wissa scored an equaliser before half-time, leaving Portugal unable to convert their possession into a decisive victory.
The match ended in a draw, while Ronaldo endured a frustrating outing. The captain struggled to influence the game, failing to create major chances, complete successful dribbles or make a significant attacking impact during the opening period.
Despite the performance, Martínez kept Ronaldo on the pitch until the final whistle, making substitutions involving other key players instead.
Scholes Says Ronaldo May Be Better Used as a Substitute
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes said managing Ronaldo’s role presents a challenge for Martínez.
The former Manchester United midfielder, who played alongside Ronaldo at Manchester United F.C., suggested the five-time Ballon d’Or winner could be more effective coming from the bench in the closing stages of matches.
Scholes argued that playing as a central striker requires movement and pressing, areas where age can become a factor.
He said Ronaldo remains capable of scoring goals, especially in a Portugal team that dominates possession, but warned that faster transition-based matches could expose limitations.

Scholes added that Portugal’s lack of another outstanding striker makes the decision even harder for Martínez.
He believes Ronaldo’s experience and finishing ability remain valuable but questioned whether starting every match is the best approach.
The former midfielder also compared Ronaldo’s situation with Luka Modrić, who continues playing at the highest level despite being 40.
According to Scholes, Ronaldo’s competitive mentality could also be affected by seeing other global stars such as Messi and Kylian Mbappé produce big performances during the tournament.
