Nigerian Afrobeats singer Joeboy has expressed concern over the growing level of ego and unhealthy competition among artists in the Nigerian music industry.
The singer said many musicians now approach collaborations with the mindset of trying to outshine one another instead of creating good music together.
Speaking during a recent interview on Cool FM Lagos alongside fellow artist Wizard Chan, Joeboy explained why he prefers working with artists he already has a good relationship with.
According to him, collaborations become easier when there is mutual respect and friendship between artists.
“It is easier for me to collaborate with artists that I am cool with or friends with. Because there will be no ego or inner competition,” Joeboy said.
The singer added that he personally expects featured artists to deliver their best performance on a song.
“Personally, if I feature you, I expect you to outshine me in the song. That is why I featured you. So, I don’t get the competition,” he added.
Wizard Chan Also Reacts to Industry Ego
Wizard Chan also shared his opinion during the interview, blaming ego for many collaboration issues in the music industry.
According to him, some artists attempt to control how others record their verses during collaborations.
“Some artists will ask for a feature and want to tell you how to do your job. That is wrong. Let me do my thing,” he said.
The singer explained that collaborations should allow different talents and styles to blend naturally.
Competition Among Artists
Wizard Chan further stated that some artists change their verses after hearing stronger performances from collaborators because they see music collaborations as a competition.
“The aim of collaboration is to bring a different aspect to the song. And it is not a competition,” he added.
