A professor of international relations, Femi Otubanjo, has expressed surprise over the presidential ambition of former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, describing him as “not an asset” for the nation’s top office.
Otubanjo made the remarks during an interview on Arise News morning programme, where he assessed key political figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The professor said he was taken aback that Amaechi is pursuing the presidency, arguing that the former minister lacks what he described as the required political strength for the role.
He also criticised the tendency of Nigerian politicians to rely heavily on repeated political messaging rather than broad national appeal.
Comments on ADC Presidential Primary
Otubanjo further argued that Amaechi should not have contested the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
He questioned the opposition party’s strength in southern Nigeria, stating that it lacks prominent political figures in the region apart from Amaechi.

According to him, the ADC currently lacks strong political representation in southern Nigeria, which could affect its electoral prospects.
He maintained that Amaechi alone does not provide enough political weight for the party in the region.
