Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has condemned the remand of activist Omoyele Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre, describing it as a setback for Nigeria’s democracy.
Obi said the development raises concerns about the use of state institutions in ways that could discourage dissent and weaken civic freedoms.
His reaction follows a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja, where Justice Mohammed Umar ordered Sowore’s remand pending the determination of an application seeking a stay of execution of an earlier bail-related order.
The court also dismissed a request for the judge to withdraw from the case over allegations of bias.
Obi warns against shrinking civic space
In a statement shared on Tuesday, Obi said the situation reflects a troubling pattern that must be addressed to protect democratic values.
He stressed that while the judiciary remains central to justice delivery, it must not appear to be used to suppress opposing voices or limit civic engagement.
According to him, democracy thrives when fundamental human rights such as freedom of expression and peaceful assembly are protected.
Concerns over democratic stability
Obi further warned that continued pressure on civic space could deepen public distrust in government institutions, especially amid economic hardship and insecurity.
He cautioned against treating critics of government as threats to national stability, insisting that such actions could push the country toward authoritarian tendencies.
The former Anambra State governor also urged authorities to ensure strict adherence to constitutional rights and due process in handling similar cases.
Broader reactions
Rights group Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) also criticised Sowore’s detention, arguing that it undermines democratic freedoms.
The case continues to generate debate around judicial independence and the state of civic space in Nigeria.
