The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed confidence that ongoing infrastructure projects across Abuja will significantly influence voter sentiment in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
Wike made the remarks on Tuesday after inspecting several major projects lined up for commissioning as part of activities marking President Bola Tinubu’s second year in office.
The minister argued that residents of the capital territory are already experiencing visible improvements in governance, particularly in satellite towns and rural communities that were previously underserved.
Growing Impact of Infrastructure in FCT Projects and 2027 Elections
According to Wike, the expanding wave of infrastructure delivery is reshaping public perception of governance in the Federal Capital Territory.
He noted that basic amenities such as roads, electricity access, and improved living conditions are becoming more visible, especially outside Abuja’s city centre.
“What the people want is simple. They want to feel the impact of governance,” Wike said. “Nigerians are interested in good governance, infrastructure, electricity and improved living conditions.”
APC Performance and Political Outlook
Addressing questions on whether the ongoing projects could influence electoral outcomes, Wike pointed to recent local government election results as evidence of growing political acceptance of the administration.
He suggested that development-driven governance is gradually shifting voter sentiment in favour of the APC.
“What reason would people have not to vote for Mr President now?” he asked, referring to President Bola Tinubu.
Expansion of Development Beyond Abuja City Centre
Wike stressed that for the first time, major development projects are extending beyond Abuja’s central districts into satellite towns.
He cited the inauguration of the A2-Pai Road in Kwali as a key example, describing it as a milestone in rural infrastructure delivery.
According to him, such projects demonstrate a deliberate effort to decentralise development and improve access to basic infrastructure across all parts of the FCT.
Inspection of Major Ongoing Projects
During his inspection tour, the minister reviewed several infrastructure sites nearing completion.
These include:
- Rehabilitation of the Appeal Court Complex in Dakibiyu
- Construction of Judges’ Quarters in KatampeInternal road projects within Katampe District
- Relocation site for Apo Mechanic Village traders
He noted that the Appeal Court Complex is about 70% completed, with finishing works such as painting and detailing ongoing.
Wike also confirmed that residential quarters for judges across different courts are nearing completion, describing the pace of work as satisfactory.
Road Expansion and Community Development
The minister further inspected ongoing road construction projects in Gaduwa, Kabusa, Kuje, and Gwagwalada, where streetlights, drainage systems, and road markings are at advanced stages.
He said these projects are part of a broader strategy to expand infrastructure delivery across the territory.
At the Apo informal sector relocation site, he confirmed that road and lighting installations have been completed, while water supply and security infrastructure will begin soon.
Security and Final Development Phase
Wike added that security agencies are already working to establish facilities at the relocation site, including a police station and residential quarters for officers.
He reiterated that at least 20 major projects will be commissioned during the anniversary period, with the possibility of more being added as completion progresses.
Political Implications of FCT Projects and 2027 Elections
The minister maintained that the visible spread of infrastructure across the FCT is likely to strengthen public trust in the current administration.
He urged critics and opposition figures to visit project sites and assess the scale of development firsthand.
