A political gathering of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State was disrupted by violence on Saturday, causing tension among party members.
The incident occurred during the party’s local congress, which was initially scheduled to take place at Oghara Township Stadium but was later relocated to another venue within the council area.
Lawmaker Raises Concern
The member representing Ethiope Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, said she arrived at the new venue shortly before disturbances began.
In a statement released after the incident, the lawmaker alleged that unidentified individuals disrupted the congress, leading to injuries among some attendees. She noted that several affected persons were reportedly taken to medical facilities for treatment.
Ibori-Suenu also expressed concern over what she described as security threats around the venue, stating that she was unable to fully access the congress ground.
Security Presence
According to her account, security personnel attached to her ensured her safety amid the unrest. She called on law enforcement agencies to step in and restore calm in the area.
The lawmaker appealed to party supporters to remain peaceful and avoid actions that could escalate tensions.
Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu is the daughter of former Delta State governor, James Ibori.
Call for Stability
Reports indicate that tension persisted in parts of the local government area after the disruption. Stakeholders have urged relevant authorities to strengthen security measures to prevent further disturbances.
