The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) branch at the University of Lagos has announced an indefinite strike following what it described as incomplete salary payments to its members.
The decision was reached after an emergency congress held by the union, according to a communiqué signed by the chapter’s chairperson, Idou Kehinde, and secretary, Adesina Arikawe.
Reason for the Strike
According to the statement, lecturers received reduced salaries for January and February 2026, a situation the union described as unacceptable.
ASUU claimed that the university management made deductions affecting allowances such as Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) and the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA).
The union argued that the salary reductions were inconsistent with what lecturers receive in other federal universities.
Withdrawal of Services
Following deliberations, the congress resolved that members would withdraw their services starting Wednesday, March 11, 2026, until the university authorities fully pay the outstanding salaries.
The union stressed that the strike would continue until the salary issues are resolved.
Background to the Dispute
The development comes months after the Federal Government and ASUU reached a new agreement aimed at improving lecturers’ welfare.
The deal included a 40 percent increase in academic staff salaries under the Consolidated University Academic Staff Salary (CONUASS) structure and introduced updated allowances to support teaching and research activities.
However, some institutions have reportedly faced challenges implementing the new salary adjustments.
