Peter Obi has urged Nigerians to reject Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the next general election, citing the government’s failure to improve electricity supply across the country.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate said the president should be held accountable for a campaign promise made ahead of the 2023 elections, where he stated that he should not be re-elected if he failed to deliver stable power within four years.
Obi argued that the current electricity situation shows that the promise has not been fulfilled, noting that power generation has remained below expected levels while tariffs have increased.
According to him, Nigeria’s average electricity supply has dropped below the level recorded when the current administration took office, making life more difficult for citizens and businesses.
He also highlighted data on electricity consumption, stating that Nigeria ranks far below the African average, which reflects deeper structural challenges in the power sector.
Obi further referenced a recent visit by the president to Jos, where he reportedly complained about the lack of electricity at an airport, limiting the duration of his stay.
He described the incident as a reflection of the gap between leadership and the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians, many of whom endure prolonged power outages daily.
The former governor emphasised that elections should be used as a tool for accountability, urging citizens to prioritise competence and performance when choosing their leaders.
He added that addressing the electricity crisis is critical to Nigeria’s economic growth and overall development.
