Northern CAN Urges Christians to Defend Themselves Ahead of Easter

Northern CAN self defence Easter attacks

Christian Association of Nigeria in the northern region has urged members to take proactive steps to defend themselves ahead of Easter celebrations.

The call follows recent attacks in Jos, where several people were killed during a Palm Sunday incident.

Northern CAN chairman, Joseph Hayab, said communities must organise themselves to resist continued violence.

He stressed that attackers are not invincible and that communities should no longer live in fear.

Hayab noted that repeated attacks during major Christian celebrations remain a serious concern.

He added that the violence appears designed to discourage worship and create fear among believers.

Despite the situation, he encouraged Christians to remain steadfast and continue their religious activities.

Security agencies have already increased alert levels nationwide ahead of Easter.

Defence Headquarters Nigeria assured citizens of tighter security and improved surveillance during the festive period.

However, security experts are divided on how civilians should respond to the threat.

A retired military officer, John Sura, supported lawful self-defence and community-based security measures.

He said citizens could take minimal legal steps to protect themselves during attacks.

According to him, stronger local vigilance groups could complement the efforts of security forces. On the other hand, Abdulwahab Ademola warned against arming civilians.

He argued that such actions could worsen insecurity and create additional risks.Instead, he recommended the use of early warning systems and improved community coordination.

Meanwhile, the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria called for a thorough investigation into the attacks.

The group said there is a need to review Nigeria’s security strategy and address underlying causes of the violence.

Authorities have also intensified deployment of security personnel to affected areas.

The Nigeria Police Force confirmed that additional officers have been sent to restore calm and track down those responsible.
