Eric Chelle Apologises to Nigerians Over World Cup Heartbreak, AFCON Setback

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle discussing Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman absence

Eric Chelle has once again expressed regret over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while also apologising to fans for the team’s inability to lift the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title.

The Super Eagles coach delivered the emotional message after Nigeria successfully defended their Unity Cup crown with an impressive victory over Jamaica in London.

Chelle Reflects on World Cup Qualification Failure

Despite recent success in the Unity Cup, Chelle admitted that missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup remains a painful experience for him and the national team.

Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the tournament ended after a playoff defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo, denying the three-time African champions a place at football’s biggest event.

The 2026 World Cup will be hosted by United States, Canada and Mexico.

Super Eagles Also Fell Short at AFCON 2025

Chelle also reflected on Nigeria’s campaign at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Although the Super Eagles reached the latter stages of the competition, they were unable to secure the title and eventually finished third.

The coach acknowledged the disappointment felt by supporters who had hoped to see Nigeria crowned African champions once again.

Coach Thanks Nigerians for Continued Support

Speaking after the Unity Cup triumph, Chelle thanked Nigerians for standing by the team during difficult moments.

He stressed that he remains committed to giving everything possible to improve the national team and achieve future success.

According to him, the support shown by Nigerian fans continues to motivate both the coaching staff and players.

Unity Cup Victory Offers Hope for the Future

While the World Cup disappointment remains fresh, Nigeria’s successful defence of the Unity Cup has provided a positive sign for the future.

The convincing win over Jamaica demonstrated the team’s quality and offered supporters renewed optimism as preparations continue for upcoming international competitions.
