Nkeiruka Onyejeocha has resigned from her role as Minister of State for Labour and Employment, becoming one of the latest cabinet members to step down ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Her resignation follows a directive by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which required all political appointees with plans to contest elective positions in 2027 to vacate their offices.
The former minister made her decision public through a statement released on her social media platforms, expressing appreciation for the opportunity to serve in the current administration.
In her message, Onyejeocha thanked the president and members of the Federal Executive Council for their support during her time in office, describing her tenure as a period of meaningful service and national contribution.
She noted that her decision to step down marks the beginning of a new phase in her political journey, although she did not reveal the specific position she intends to contest.
Onyejeocha also commended the staff of the Ministry of Labour and Employment for their commitment and professionalism, highlighting their efforts in promoting workers’ welfare, improving workplace safety, and supporting job creation initiatives.
The former lawmaker, who represented Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency in Abia State for several years, further expressed gratitude to her constituents for their continued support throughout her political career.
Her exit comes after similar resignations by other members of the cabinet, including Said Alkali and Yusuf Tuggar, who have also stepped down to pursue political ambitions ahead of the next election cycle.
The development reflects early political realignments as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 general elections.
