The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised Senate President Godswill Akpabio following remarks he made about opposition reactions to the recently passed Electoral Act 2026.
Akpabio had spoken during a reception held in honour of Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on Saturday. During the event, the Senate President said he often feels satisfied when the opposition criticises laws passed by the Senate, suggesting it indicates that lawmakers are making the right decisions.
His statement came amid growing debate surrounding the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
Reacting on Sunday, the ADC, through its National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, argued that Akpabio’s comments suggested the legislation was drafted primarily to benefit the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu.
According to the party, some sections of the new electoral law could weaken the political opposition and reduce public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
The ADC also expressed concern about certain provisions of the law, particularly the removal of certificate forgery as a basis for challenging election outcomes in court.
Abdullahi said such changes could undermine transparency and accountability in the country’s electoral system.
He further stated that political leaders involved in passing the law should expect strong criticism and historical scrutiny over their roles in shaping the legislation.
The debate over the Electoral Act 2026 continues to generate reactions from political parties and stakeholders across Nigeria as discussions about electoral reforms remain ongoing.
